I do not understand people who rally against the passing of RH bill. Usually, when people protest about political issues, they want freedom, they want access to information, they want their human rights upheld. Not here in the Philippines, apparently. People who rally against the RH bill do not want any of that. All for the name of self-righteousness, religious extremism, and misguided logic.
The problem is that many Filipinos think they’re holier that Jesus. In the most superficial level, we are more Catholic than the Vatican. Many Filipinos do a lot of talk, but not a lot of walk. Case in point, Manny Pacquiao is one of the most influential people who opposes the RH bill, but ironically enough, his wife, Jinky, uses contraceptive pills because she does not want to have more children. Did Manny Pacquiao think that Jinky has not been getting pregnant all these years because of divine intervention?
In history, the power of the church was at its height during the “Middle Ages”, which is often referred to as the “Dark Ages” because the period was characterized by intellectual darkness. In layman’s term, shit happens when we let the church take over our entire lives. Too much church equals zero progress. With the emergence of the Renaissance and the restoration of reason, the influence of church has been long forgotten. The problem with the Philippines is that we’re still stuck in the Middle Ages. We still let the church govern our lives. When is it going to end? Who got the balls to say to the bishops: “Enough is enough, back off!!”
I always believe that people don’t need money to be wise, they just have to open their eyes sometimes to see what’s really going on. I have faith that more and more Filipinos are starting to see the light, the kind of light that does not blind. I have a feeling that we are on the verge of something revolutionary, something’s coming…
(Finally, learning about contraceptives and family planning will not make anybody promiscuous, in the same way that reading John Grisham novels will not make anybody a lawyer. Why are people so scared of empowerment and information?)
